Agent Based Model to Simulate Urban Land Use Change

چکیده
The economic reform and open door policy had a profound impact on Iran's urbanization. Because human-environment interactions are so complex, Agent Based Models (ABM) provides a powerful new set of tools to scholars with diverse background. ABM strength lies in their ability of combining spatial modeling techniques with biophysical and socioeconomic models. In this study, two Landsat TM images of Fars Province, in southern of Iran, which experienced dramatic land use change acquired in 1995 and 2005, were classified by the maximum likelihood method in the IMAGINE ENVI software. This paper presents an ABM, which is designed to simulate land use change based on human behavior. CORMAS software, which is a programming environment dedicated to creating ABM. In this paper, we construct a spatially explicit ABM of land use change through specification of interdependencies and feedbacks between agents and their environment. We have derived the method of AMB to consider: (1) First aim is to understand what kind of spatial patterns emerge from different agent characteristics, and decision and learning mechanisms. Landscapes produced by the learning ABM is compared to actual land use data. (2) By varying the parameter estimation schemes and the spatial metrics calculated from the simulated land use and the actual land use, the role of agent preferences for different land uses is explored. We find that ABM are particularly well suited for representing complex spatial interactions under heterogeneous conditions and for modeling decentralized, autonomous decision making. Based on decisions of spatially distributed individual economic agents operating in a policy framework, the model produces aggregated land use patterns as an outcome. The SLEUTH Land Use Change Model: A Review
Land use change is driven by interaction in space and time between humans and the environment that can be captured by computer simulation models (Veldkamp and Verburg, 2004). In the last few decades, land use change models have played an important role in understanding the causes, mechanisms and consequences of land use dynamics. SLEUTH is an open source cellular automata based land use change ...

Urban growth is a dynamic and evolutionary spatial and social process that relates to the changes of urban spatial units and the transformation of people’s lifestyles and consequently demographic changes. Considering the urban development process as a function of land uses interactions, population structure and the strategic behavior of the agents involved in the urban development process (the ...
متن کاملIntegrating cellular automata Markov model to simulate future land use change of a tropical basin
Predicting land use change is an indispensable aspect in identifying the best development and management of land resources and their potential. This study used certified land-use maps of 1997, 2006, and 2015 combined with ancillary data such as road networks, water bodies and slopes, obtained from the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Surveying and Mapping in Malaysia, respectivel...
متن کاملAgent-based simulation approach to urban dynamics modeling
This article presents a general agent-based simulation approach that captures agents’ decision-making processes and dynamic relationships that determine urban shape. The article shows how to simulate urban growth patterns and land-use change dynamics using economic assumptions and by modeling the interactions of computational agents.
متن کاملPerformance comparison of land change modeling techniques for land use projection of arid watersheds
The change of land use/land cover has been known as an imperative force in environmental alteration, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. This research was mainly aimed to assess the validity of two major types of land change modeling techniques via a three dimensional approach in Birjand urban watershed located in an arid climatic region of Iran. Thus, a Markovian approach based on two suit...
